3 tectonic plates cross, the Turkish expert warns of another region with high seismic risk
The February 6 Kahramanmaras earthquake in Turkey caused loss of life, rendered thousands of buildings unusable, and affected millions of people. But as Turkey heals the wounds of the earthquake in the area, the Geophysical Engineering expert said attention is focused around the Yedisu region. He warns that the tension has increased in this region where 3 tectonic plates intersect.

“Our focus is on Kahramanmaraş, but our ears are on Yedisu. We clearly saw that the tension was high around Varto”, said Hamdi Alkan.
According to him, Bingöl Karlıova has produced more than 50 earthquakes greater than 5 in recent years. In the studies carried out by expert Hamdi Alkan, it was found that the risk in this region is higher than in other regions.
“We know there are more than 50 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 5. We have a study in this region that is currently under evaluation. We tried to reveal the maps, velocity structures and a parameter related to the seismic hazard in this region. According to the results we got, we clearly saw that the regression is especially high in the Yedisu segment of the North Anatolia Zone, but the tension is higher around Varto towards the southeast. Therefore, we think that the risk in this region is higher than in other regions”.
The two earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 on February 6 in Kahramanmaraş were described as the disaster of the century.
