Giulio Variboba (Arbërisht: Jul Variboba)

Giulio Variboba (Arbërisht: Jul Variboba) was an Arbëresh poet that gave an important contribution to the literature in the Albanian language. Variboba was born in 1725 in San Giorgio Albanese in the province of Cosenza to a family originally from the Mallakastra region of southern Albania. He studied at the Corsini seminary in San Benedetto Ullano, a center of learning and training for the priesthood of the Italo-Albanian Catholic Church. This seminary, founded in 1732 by Pope Clement XII, affected the cultural advancement of the Arbëresh of Calabria in the eighteenth century similar to that of the Greek seminary of Palermo for the Arbëresh of Sicily. Iljaz was without a doubt the greatest Albanian adventurer of his time. He traveled wherever the road took him: to Paris, to Johannesburg, to New York, to Argentina, to Spain. General Mehmet Pasha Dëralla

On October 31, 1843, in Gradec, a village between Tetova and Gostivar (today North Macedonia), was born the great warrior for the freedom and independence of Albania, General Mehmet Pasha Dëralla. He was graduated from the Military Academy in Istanbul and served as a high officer in Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Greece. General Dëralla was fully at the service of the League of Prizren. Later he became one of the initiators and leaders of the League of Peja and Ferizaj Assembly and fought in the anti-Ottoman insurrection in 1910-1912.
