In 2013, the Chelyabinsk meteor fell in western Russia, injuring more than 1,600 people.
But what was surprising was the fact that no one warned about this meter that was 90 meters wide. Experts say he was not seen because he was hidden behind the glare of the sun.
The worst thing is that other “invisible” meteors are expected to hit our planet.
“Asteroids similar to the Chelyabinsk meteor hit Earth every 50 or 100 years,” says Richard Moissl, of the European Space Agency.
The good news is that very soon, scientists can spot these invisible asteroids.
“We will launch an observation mission into space in a few years, which will serve as a warning for any asteroids heading towards our planet from the direction of the sun. The infrared telescope will spot asteroids over 20 meters in size,” added Moissl.
