The rare species of octopus named “Dumbo” was spotted by American scientists during a deep-sea research dive they conducted with their remote-controlled vehicle on September 13.
Ocean Exploration Trust researchers were exploring the ocean floor at a depth of 1,682 meters on an unnamed seamount at Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands, when the octopus suddenly passed in front of their E/V Nautilus camera. .

The sea creature was so named because of the flapping fins on the side of its head, which resemble the famous Disney character.
